Draft

“The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how.” – Mark 4:26-34

A well-read homeless man
stopped me on the sidewalk.
He asked if I could spare
some change. I told him

I was a starving artist,
bashfully offering up
a buck thirty-five
and a bus transfer,

to which he said,“I'm working
on a book and my editor
is really hounding me
for a draft, which is funny,”

laughing, “because he is
a cat,” looking down
at the cross-eyed feline
peering out of his 49ers

Starter jacket. “Remember,
the Kingdom of God is like
the Great American Novel –
no one has ever written it,

but everyone has read it.”
