Creative Night

The roots of Coastland Commons are in the practice of creativity as a human birthright. As our community was emerging, we continued to hold on to the idea that each of us has a call to be creative. The work of creativity is vastly different for each person. Creativity doesn’t mean being crafty or even being artistic. Creativity is part of listening to our spiritual selves and allowing that work to come to life through our bodies. This can mean exploring the arts. The skills of the artist can be a strong partner in the work of creativity. But it is not limited to the arts. It can come through community, prayer, walking, listening to others, meals, reading, writing, drawing, gardening, and many more practices that open us up toward the world and toward each other.

In this February gathering, we will come back to our roots. We will join together in a creative poetic exercise (no previous experience required!). We’ll also hear from Kyle and Dani as they share about the value of creativity within our spiritual lives. Why is it important to view ourselves as creative and spiritual people? How does creativity tend to push us towards human justice? And then how does creativity give us the grounding to do the justice work that nourishes communities? As always, we’ll gather with a meal. We’ll have a brief exploration of this topic, engage in a liturgy of creativity, and then move into a creative exercise.

Coastland Commons meets on the second Monday of the month at Northminster Presbyterian Church in Ballard (7706 25th Ave NW, Seattle, WA, 98117), where we share a meal of locally sourced food and have conversations on theology, creativity and the arts.
